Chito inspired entire generations of Liberals from his days as a student activist up until his service with the CHR. He personally recruited into the Party some of today’s most prominent Liberal stalwarts— including Vice Presidential candidate and Party President Sen. Kiko Pangilinan; Senatorial candidate and Party Executive Vice President for Internal Affairs Cong. Teddy Baguilat; and Party Executive Vice President for External Affairs Cong. Erin Tañada.
He was instrumental in keeping the Party on the path of courage and principle during times when it would have been easier to yield to the darker forces in our democracy. He welcomed new members with warmth and inspired many of us to stay true to our values, gaano man kahirap ng mga hamon na ating kinakaharap. He gave the Party a veritable shoulder to lean on, and a fine example of how a liberal life should be lived.
Sa maraming pagkakataong sinubok tayo ng kasaysayan, mula panahon ng martial law hanggang ngayon, Chito was right there with us — ever reliable, relentless in defending freedom even at great personal cost, and always steadfast in his faith in our people and our democracy.
